Robben Island Memorial Sculpture

This was made  in 1996 to celebrate the reunion  of the Rivonia trialists on Robben Island. This collaborative sculpture was made up of an invited group of Cape Town artists - David Brown, Kevin Brandt, Hamilton Budhaza, Robert & Slingsby. The artists arranged large chunks of lime stone and original pick axes used by the prisoners for the lime stone mining on the island . The highlight of the ceremony was when each of the prisoners including Nelson Mandela, symbolically broke the stone.
